so anyway, onto my review of Dead Space. I'm not going to talk about the story much, for the sake of avoiding spoilers, just a very brief overview.
OVERVIEW:
Dead Space is a sci-fi horror third person shooter that takes places on a planet cracker called "The Ishimura." the player takes the control of an engineer named Isaac Clarke who is part of a search and rescue team sent to investigate "The Ishimura" after contact with it was lost. when they arrive, they quickly discover that the ship has been overrun by nightmarish creatures called necromorphs who killed and mutated most of the crew, and its up to Isaac and a small band of survivors to solve the mystery of the necromorphs before they spread any further. this kind of scenario has been done a million times in both movies and other games, so Dead Space is not necessarily unique in that sense, but makes up for that on several different levels.
GAMEPLAY:
When I first started playing Dead Space, I quickly noticed similar gameplay mechanics from other third person shooters such as Resident Evil 4, which is the most similar. So if your were really good at Resident Evil 4, Gear of War, ect. you will feel quite comfortable with the controls in Dead Space. So gameplay is fine, you press the left trigger to bring up your weapon, use the joystick to target something you want dead (which is pretty much everything in the room that moves other than you), and press the right trigger until it stops moving.
Now that brings up anything thing that probably made Dead Space 10x more awesome: Dismemberment. yes, thats right, dismemberment. The core gameplay of Dead Space revolves around that one special word. you see, unlike most shooters which usually have enemies that die quickly if you shoot them in the head a couple of times, that doesn't apply to Dead Space. if you shoot off the head of a necromorph, it almost never results in a kill unless you damaged them enough previously. In fact, from personal experience, it just pissed them off, sometimes really REALLY badly. the only effective way to deal with them is shooting off their arms, legs, tentacles, whatever. cutting off their limbs makes a bloody good show, and kills enemies quickly. needless to say, if you love blood, gore, and limbs flying everywhere, this is the game of your dreams.
OVERALL:
I had a blast playing Dead Space, the gameplay was solid, some of creatures were downright disturbing, and it had moments of absolute dread that freaked the shit out of me
